The Nathdwara Collection

Born over four centuries ago in the temple town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan, Pichvai (from the Sanskrit pichh, "back," and wai, "hanging") are devotional paintings created to hang behind the idol of Shrinathji — Lord Krishna in his beloved child form. Traditionally rendered on cloth by master artists of the Pushtimarg tradition, each work narrates Krishna's leelas: the moonlit gardens, the sacred cows, the lotus ponds, and the divine darshan of Shrinathji himself.

Our collection carries that lineage into the modern home. Painted by hand in the age-old Nathdwara idiom, these pieces hold the hallmarks of the craft — the deep indigo night skies, the golden and silver kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling trees), the gentle herds of cows gathered beneath them, and borders of blooming lotus. The chowk-patterned works, with their soft green-and-cream checks, frame the sacred cow and the serene face of Shrinathji crowned with peacock plumes: quieter, more meditative compositions that bring stillness to a wall.

Each painting is a visual prayer — a piece of living heritage, made slowly and with devotion, to bring beauty, calm, and a sense of the sacred into contemporary spaces.

Care Instructions

To preserve the beauty and longevity of your handcrafted Pichvai:

• Keep away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure can fade the natural and mineral-based pigments over time. Display in indirect or ambient light.
• Protect from moisture and humidity. Avoid hanging in bathrooms, kitchens, or damp walls. High humidity can damage both the pigments and the surface.
• Dust gently. Use a soft, dry cloth or a clean, soft-bristled brush. Never use water, cleaning solutions, or chemicals on the artwork.
• Handle with clean, dry hands and hold by the edges to avoid transferring oils onto the painted surface.
• Frame under glass for long-term protection once you've chosen your framing — this shields the work from dust, moisture, and handling.
• Store flat or rolled loosely (painted side out) if not displayed, in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
