Turang: Hand-Painted Aipan Horse on Cotton

This piece is rooted in Aipan, the ritual folk art of Kumaon in Uttarakhand. For generations, women in the hills have drawn Aipan on floors, walls and doorways to welcome good fortune during festivals and ceremonies. Tribal women artisans of Uttarakhand have carried that tradition onto cloth, painting slowly and entirely by hand.

A single horse rises across deep red cotton, its body layered with fine lines, rosettes, chevrons and scalloped borders, each drawn in white limestone powder. A small sun sits quietly in the corner. There is no stencil or print here. Every line is freehand, so small irregularities in pattern and texture are part of the piece, marks of the hand that made it.

In Indian folk traditions the horse stands for strength, movement and good fortune. Here it becomes a calm, commanding presence, well suited to a living room wall, an entryway or above a console.

Care Instructions

• Do not wash, wet or dry clean. Water will damage the limestone painting.
• Keep away from moisture, humidity and direct sunlight to prevent fading and flaking.
• Avoid touching the painted surface. Handle the artwork by its edges.
• Do not fold. For storage or transport, roll it loosely with the painted side facing outward, with acid-free tissue or soft cotton between the layers.
• To remove dust, brush very lightly with a soft, dry brush.
• For long-term display, we recommend framing it behind glass. This protects the painting and keeps it looking its best for years.
